Alps Trip 2019: Salzberg

Today - no travel! We just stay in Salzburg.

The morning begins with a formal tour of Salzburg Old Town and the Castle above it. We cross our street to the Mirabel Gardens to begin our walk to Old Town and the start of the tour. The Mirabel Gardens are sort of famous with Americans because scenes of the Sound of Music were shot in them.

We pass statues and fountains.

This view shows typical buildings in the newer part of Salzberg. The hotel we stay in looks pretty much like this, too.

To get to Old Town, we cross the River Salzach. The castle we will visit is on top of the hill, in the center of the photo.

As we cross the above bridge, we see these locks left by couples in love. We saw the same thing on a bridge in Paris.

Old Town streets are narrow, and the buildings continuous and tall and decorated. Below is an example:

Below is another life-size, painted cow. If anyone ever really paid attention to me, they would get me something similar for my front yard!

Here is a view of the castle that we will visit:

Is there a McDonalds in Old Town? Yes! This large medallion hangs hangs outside:

Near the McDonalds, we come to an area popular with Mozart enthusiasts, since the building where he lived is here. What else is Salzburg famous for? Chocolate. Here is how this is celebrated:

Why they are ducks, I do not know.

The vertical rods that run up this building would ring for various apartments. The one on the left in the photo below connected to Mozart's room:

Alas, the photo below was the last one shot by my 9-year old Sony alpha 33. It just froze up after that. It was a good camera-friend, taking especially remarkable photos when we went on Safari in Africa, plus thousands upon thousands of photos of travels, hikes, outings, and family. Good bye old friend.

The rest of the photos on this trip were taken on my iPhone.

We took a break from Old-Town-walking and our tour guide treated us to Mozart chocolates and coffees. Then we boarded the funicular (a train) and went up to explore the castle on our own. Here is a long street we walked down:

After the castle, we walked back to our hotel on our own. It was a hot day, so we hung out in our room and a couple restaurants before an evening stroll across the street in the Mirabel gardens. We happened upon a stage where dancers and singers performed in the open air. The dancing seemed so comfortable to me, and I felt like I must have some Austrian blood in my heritage.
